Extreme weather events and the failure to mitigate and adapt to climate change are the biggest global risks, and pose a serious threat to global stability. The sustainable management of catchments is key to climate resilience.

The India-UK Water Centre invited applications from water scientists and engineers based in Indian and UK institutions to attend this 3-day workshop to discuss this important topic at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK from 8th – 10th May 2019*.

The specific aims of this workshop were to:
  • Explore and build on existing knowledge and research on integrated catchment management to enhance collaboration and identify pathways to impact (including relevant NERC – MoES Science)
  • Identify gaps in research and innovation that are constraining sustainable catchment management.
  • Explore innovative approaches to monitoring and management, and consider the potential for SMART Rivers as part of integrated catchment management.

A SMART River supports the effective integration of physical, digital and human systems, increases citizen engagement, and contributes to catchment resilience.

This workshop attracted early career and experienced researchers, NGOs and Businesses (SMEs and Industry) who are active in Science and Innovation for Catchment Management.  Thirty six workshop participants, including six early career scientists and students, as well as three water-related NGOs, presented their work, shared their knowledge and co-created new proposals for research that drives towards SMART Rivers as part of integrated catchment management.

The workshop was delivered by ICE blue and supported by partners from the INTCATCH Horizon 2020 project (www.intcatch.eu; The INTCATCH project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 689341-2), which is demonstrating innovative monitoring solutions for catchments, and the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay.

The IUKWC convened the workshop, covering reasonable travel and subsistence expenses for UK and India-based participants attending the workshop.

*Due to an unforeseen major travel delay from India, the workshop was shortened to two days (9th -10th May, 2019)

This was a competitive call, with spaces available for a limited number of delegates based at UK and Indian institutions. The Centre looked to ensure a balance of expertise and numbers of attendees from any one institution represented at the workshop. In the event of greater numbers of applications than places available, the Centre considered:

  • Applicant expertise relevant to the workshop theme,
  • Motivation for attending the workshop,
  • Expected contribution to the workshop,
  • Potential benefit to the applicant in attending,
  • Organisational balance.
Attendees were invited to propose a 20 minute presentation or to present a poster at the Workshop.
