The project aims to improve the understanding of the aquifer system in the Sundarbans, by understanding the practicality of artificial aquifer recharge, and its potential contribution to aquifer sustainability. Part of the project’s focus will be on whether there is scope for Aquifer Storage and Recovery, injecting fresh water into the saline shallow aquifer system during monsoon months and recovering it for dry season use. This approach would avoid risks of aquifer degradation or contamination associated with conventional recharge of the freshwater aquifers.

This project is an outcome of IUKWC’s GFES event on "Managing and monitoring agricultural water demand" which took place during Dec 10th-12nd, 2018 at Sandeshkhali block of Sundarbans, West Bengal, India.
